Participate, Connect, Dedication = Cyclical Growth!
Apologies My Fellow Colleagues
I apologize for the late blog post. I am a little behind but I am getting back on track. I realize deadlines are important and I do not want to undervalue their significance. But lately my heart has been very heavy therefore the words and thoughts are just not in me. The best thing I have found I can do when this happens is to slow down and listen, then write.
My Rambling Inquiry Thoughts
I feel the journey of learning is never ending nor should it be. Although, at times I sometimes feel
overwhelmed and bombarded with ensuring I am implementing the “best” pedagogy and the “newest” skills,
working full time all while still being a mom, wife, and everything else! So sometimes all I need to do is a
laugh. I connected with Indigenous comedian Vance Banzo as his humor is relatable to my own experiences.
To continue to develop my skills, pedagogy and professional development I actively seek opportunities
within my school, district, and province. I’ve learned to be an active PARTICIPANT in my career! At the school level, I had the privilege to participate in a book club. It was wonderful to
connect with staff and even though we were reading the same book all of us had different stories to share
about our learning. I was also a member of the ProD and Aboriginal Leadership committees therefore I had
the honour of organizing, presenting, and guiding other colleagues learning. Furthermore, I am the nosey
one! I will walk into others' classrooms and chat with my colleagues to find out what they are doing. I learn
about cool websites, teaching strategies, curriculum resources they’ve discovered. I’ve learned during my
career that CONNECTIONis so important! At the district level, I applied to be a Tech Mentor and I had the opportunity to learn and
present new technologies to classrooms within our district. The skills and technologies I learned are
transferable to the SLLC. Also, I applied for a SET BC grant that provided my class with the opportunity to
create a virtual on the land tour of the Dallas-Barnhartvale Nature Park. Lastly, to continue to grow I
participated in the NOIIE symposium and I have co-planned a BCTF workshop for teachers within my
district. I’ve learned you have to be DEDICATED to wanting to grow within my career. I chose the title cyclical growth and not just growth as this was the
metaphor I used within my MET portfolio. The meaning behind it is explained fully on my website,
My strategies to continue to grow are to be a participant, to make connections, and to be dedicated to being
the best version of myself I can be in my career. I am learning to not only participate in person but also on
social media sites. I have started following several librarians on Twitter and Instagram. As well, I have joined
a couple Indigenous Facebook groups. In the future, I would like to further develop my skills by being
courageous and to voice my opinions through content creation. One way is to share my opinions on ProD
books I have read as well as on events I have organized. I know not everyday will be successful but I will
be like a tree.
